About Eo River, Oscos and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve

Designated by UNESCO in 2007, the Eo River, Oscos and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve spans roughly 158,883 hectares across the northwestern Spanish regions of Asturias and Galicia. This reserve centers on the Eo River estuary and its surrounding valleys encompassing the Oscos mountain range and the Terras de Burón territory. The area is notable for its well-preserved Atlantic forests, wetlands, meadows, and traditional rural landscapes, creating a mosaic of habitats that support rich biodiversity. The biosphere hosts a variety of species including otters, European mink, and numerous types of migratory birds, making it a key region for conservation and wildlife enthusiasts alike.

Topographically, the reserve includes rugged coastlines, deep river valleys, and verdant foothills that blend mountainous terrain with the maritime influence of the Cantabrian Sea. Its human history is deeply intertwined with traditional agriculture, pastoralism, and artisanal fishing, reflected in quaint villages and stone-built architecture. Outdoor recreation flourishes here, with marked hiking trails linking ancient paths through oak woods and along riverbanks, facilitating immersion in both nature and culture. Canoeing and kayaking on the Eo River offer scenic views of estuarine landscapes and birdwatching spots. Additionally, cycling and horseback riding are popular in rural settings, while seasonal festivals celebrate local customs.

Visitors appreciate the biosphere reserve not only for its natural values but also for its tranquility and opportunities to discover northern Spain’s natural and cultural heritage away from tourist crowds. The reserve serves as an outstanding example of sustainable land use balancing environmental protection with human livelihoods.
